Ecclestone vows revenge after F1 trial settlement
Filed under: Motorsports, Government/Legal, Celebrities, Racing

At times, it seems all too easy to imagine Formula One bigwig Bernie Ecclestone holding a cat and laughing maniacally like a James Bond villain. He just seems like a horrible person to be on the wrong side of. Now that Ecclestone has put his bribery trial in Germany behind him, his enemies had better watch out because Bernie is scheming for revenge.
"Now I am in a position where I have got a little bit more time and I shall follow my old idea in life: 'Don't get mad, get even.' I haven't got mad but I'm going to get even," said Ecclestone to UK newspaper The Independent. His first target is reportedly German businessman Dieter Hahn from Constantin Medien. Hahn tried to sue Ecclestone for undervaluing F1 shares to allow competing company CVC to buy them but lost.
It's possible that CVC might be putting those shares, which amount to 35 percent ownership of F1, up for sale in the future, and Ecclestone may be angling to buy them back himself. "Lots of people have looked at buying Formula One. Until they start looking at what they have got to pay, it is coffee-shop talk," said Ecclestone to the newspaper. Though, he claims buying the stake isn't a priority for him.
Ecclestone paid $100 million to German prosecutors in early August to have the charges against him dismissed. He was accused of bribing a German banker for preferential treatment and could have faced up to 10 years in prison. Ecclestone told The Independent that the prosecutors came to him first to offer the deal, and they previously said that the F1 supremo's advanced age was also a contributing factor.

2016 Ford Focus RS may yet be AWD, US sales likely
Filed under: Performance, Hatchback, Ford, Rumormill

When it comes to forbidden fruit, few vehicles are spoken of in as hushed a tone as the Ford Focus RS. The turbocharged, five-cylinder hot hatch could only be seen from afar by American customers as it tore up the roads of Europe. And while it's safe to say that Ford's Yankee fans are quite happy to now be on equal footing with drivers in the old country thanks to the Focus ST, we doubt there'd be much protestation over a successor to the RS arriving stateside.
Of course, we've seen images of the new RS undergoing testing, but a new story by Road and Track aims to fill in some very large blanks in our knowledge of that car, thanks to a pair of mysterious insiders at the Ford. Chief among those is this - the RS will almost certainly make its way to the US, albeit in limited quantities. It gets better, though.
Under hood, the new RS is unsurprisingly expected to borrow the 2.3-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder from the 2015 Ford Mustang and 2015 Lincoln MKC. While that twin-scroll turbo produces 310 horsepower in the Mustang and 285 ponies in the MKC, R&T expects the RS to deliver quite a bit more firepower - 325 to 350 hp, with preference going to the higher output due to the limited-edition nature of the RS. This roughly fits with previous reports.
R&T has it from two sources that the RS will use an all-wheel-drive system, which we imagine will be a must with so much power. The system will be totally distinct from Ford's other car-based AWD systems, and will feature torque-vectoring for even sharper handling. This system should, according to R&T, trickle down to other applications (AWD Focus ST?).
While this all seems like excellent news, as is always the case, we'd caution against counting your chickens, at least until the new model hatches. Skepticism aside, what do you think of this news? How much would you be willing to shell out for a 350-hp, AWD Focus? What other features would you like to see from Ford? Have your say in Comments.

Cadillac SRX production moving to TN, next-gen Equinox going to Mexico
Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing, Crossover, Cadillac, Luxury

It's a good week for the town of Spring Hill, TN, as General Motors has announced that its factory in the city of 31,000 will receive a $185 million contract to produce engines. On top of that, the next-generation Cadillac SRX crossover will be built at the factory (NA models are presently built in Ramos, Arizpe Mexico), which was once famous for being the home of GM's now-defunct Saturn brand.
The factory is one of GM's six facilities around the globe that will screw together the company's new line of three- and four-cylinder Ecotec engines. Spring Hill currently builds the 2.0-liter, turbocharged Ecotec, as well as the naturally aspirated 2.4 and 2.5-liter variants.
Spring Hill's vehicle assembly lines were idled in 2009, but were reactivated in 2011. The SRX is just one of the products meant to benefit from last year's $350-million investment, and should have a positive impact, creating or retaining around 1,800 positions at the factory.
How big that impact will be, though, is open for debate. According to a new report from Reuters, some of the production of Spring Hill's current vehicle, the Chevrolet Equinox, will move to GM's Ramos Arizpe, Mexico factory when that vehicle is redesigned in 2017, Reuters reports. Neither GM nor the UAW offered any comment to Reuters, although an unnamed GM spokesman did add that it's "fair to say" there will be a net increase in jobs at the factory.
Scroll down for the official press release announcing the new engine and SRX production venues from GM.

A man, his motorcycle, and his Macaw

To those of us who weren't blessed with feathers and wings - hey, at least we've got thumbs, right? - the ability to take to the air, travel huge distances from amazing heights, only to land right back where we started from is the stuff of fantasies. In fact, it's probably the most common answer to the age-old "Which super power would you most like to have" question of our youth.
Watching the video above, it's easy to see why flight is such an amazing method of travel. While our protagonists require two wheels, gasoline for their internal combustion engine and a heavy dose of concentration in order not to end up with a terrible case of road rash, their fine feathered friend looks to have a much easier path, the Macaw floating as it does across an invisible cushion of air.
We're jealous. Not just of the Macaw's ability to fly, but also of the man who's bright green best friend accompanies him on these wind-in-the-hair coastal journeys. Watch the video above to see what we mean.

Jay Leno drives postcard-perfect '32 Ford Highboy Roadster
Filed under: Aftermarket, Classics, Convertible, Performance, Videos, Ford, Celebrities

At the turn of the century, it was arguably the Honda Civic that best defined inexpensive performance tuning, and in the '50s it was the Tri-5 Chevys. One of the earliest platforms to gain a huge following among young people looking for a cheap way to go fast was the classic '32 Ford Highboy Roadster. This week, Jay Leno's Garage looks at one of the very first vehicles that defined the look of the hot rod heyday.
This '32 Ford was built in the '40s and graced the cover of the fourth issue of Hot Rod Magazine back in 1948. All of the hot rods that you see shining at car shows today owe a serious debt of gratitude to this roadster. It bears all of the cues that define the look, including a notched frame and hidden door hinges. Under the three-piece hood is a flathead V8 boasting all sorts of period modifications, including copper cylinder heads. It was seriously fast in its era too, and proved it by reaching 112.21 miles per hour on a dry lakebed in 1947.
These days, this hot rod is on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Although, if you can't make it to California to see it, the United States Postal Service is celebrating this Ford with one of its two hot rod Forever stamps. Like Jay says in the video, in terms of hot rodding, "it all comes back to this." Check out the video to learn more about this rolling piece of tuning history.

Tata approves plans to codevelop two SUVs with Land Rover
Filed under: SUV, Technology, Land Rover, India, Tata

Over the course of this year, rumors have been building about Jaguar Land Rover and its parent company, Tata Motors, co-developing vehicles, especially SUVs. Up until now, the Indian company has generally left its luxury arm's tech and expertise alone. The latest evidence, though, suggests the two sides won't keep their engineering separate too much longer.
Tata Motors' board has reportedly given the green light to developing two SUVs with engineering assistance from Land Rover, according to people familiar with the deal, speaking with Indian website Live Mint. The five- and seven-passenger models are meant to lure buyers outside of India to the brand, specifically in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. They should be ready for launch in 2017 with Tata hoping to sell around 80,000 units per year.
The new rumor fits incredibly closely with what we last heard about this proposed partnership. The new SUVs were reported to ride on a platform shared between Land Rover and Tata and it was even possible that the Indian vehicles could take advantage of JLR's Ingenium engine family. According to Live Mint, the Brit brand will also have input into tuning the SUVs' performance and handling.
Plans for these two SUVs have been simmering for at least a few months. Inklings about them came up in April when the Economic Times reported on the companies' study into building five- to seven-passenger SUVs based on the Land Rover Freelander platform. According to an unnamed JLR exec at the time, the models would use 50 percent or less of the parts from the current Freelander.

Evo pits BMW M3 against Porsche Macan in drag battle
Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Videos, Crossover, BMW, Porsche, Luxury

If you want to move five passengers in very rapid fashion and you've got a $75,000 budget, two newly introduced four-door models immediately come to mind - both are the highest performing vehicles in their respective segments. But which is faster off the line, to the 60-mile-per-hour benchmark or flat-out over an even longer run? Evo took both to paved aircraft runway to find out.
In lane one we've got the all-new Porsche Macan Turbo, which boasts a twin-turbocharged, 3.6-liter V6 rated at 400 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. The Porsche is fitted with a seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox, and the 4,244-pound crossover has the traction advantage of standard all-wheel drive. In lane two is the all-new BMW M3, powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six rated at 425 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. It is also equipped with a seven-speed, dual-clutch gearbox, but only the rear wheels of the 3,595-pound sedan are driven. Both the BMW and Porsche arrive with launch control, which helps to remove driver error off the line.
Which automaker's launch control system is better off the line? Does all-wheel-drive grip give the crossover the advantage it needs to overcome its adversary's power-to-weight advantage? Will aerodynamics factor into the results? Which would you put in your garage, and why? The video may surprise you.

2015

We started off this happy Friday by learning that the 2015 Chevy Corvette Z06 would come to dealers with a starting price of $78,000. That's not an insignificant fund, but when you start to cross-shop other cars with comparable performance, you quickly find (and we do mean quickly) that the Z06 is actually kind of an incredible bargain. Find out which of its pricy competitors comes closest to the new über 'Vette, here.
Quick Spin: 2014 Range Rover HSE

No company in the world does a quick, off-road-capable, posh luxury SUV (in sparkling brown paint, no less) quite like Land Rover's epic Range Rover. Having done full tests on the Rangie already, this time around we tackle the HSE model fitted with the supercharged 3.0-liiter V6 engine, to see if it suffers without a V8. Spoiler Alert: aluminum is a wonderful thing.
Ram to stay steely through 2020

...Then again, steel is nice, too. Pickup truck rival Ford may still be grabbing headlines for its intensive use of weight-saving aluminum in its new F-150, but Ram believes that it can stay competitive with the more conventional material. Despite a Ram 1500 refresh due out in 2015, company insiders are saying it'll be another five years before it'll start using the stuff in its pickup line.

2015 Chevy Corvette Z06 price and power compared against rivals
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Supercars, Chevrolet

The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is the most powerful production car ever from General Motors, and it's a technological landmark in the long lineage of Corvettes. It's also more affordable than you might think.
As was announced earlier today, the 2015 Z06 has a starting price of $78,995 for the coupe and $83,995 for the convertible, *including $995 in destination charges. That's not chump change, but it's well below the price ranges of several of its key competitors. The 2015 Z06 starts at $78,995* - not chump change, but well below the price ranges of key competitors.
The Corvette has long been compared with the Porsche 911, but the Z06's 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque easily eclipses the most powerful 911, the Turbo S (560 hp, 516 lb-ft). The Z06 also costs less than half as much, as the Turbo S has a starting MSRP of $182,700, and then tacks on a $995-shipping charge.

Honda CR-Z gets much-needed supercharger
Filed under: Aftermarket, Hybrid, Performance, Hatchback, Honda

Honda has really taken its time in getting an aftermarket supercharger kit for the CR-Z to enthusiasts in the US. It's finally on sale, though, and it makes you wonder if the hybrid hatchback shouldn't have had it from the day it went on sale.
The supercharger kit developed by Honda Performance Development boosts output from the CR-Z's 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine to 197 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, according to Honda spokesperson Jessica Howell, an improvement of 67 hp and 36 lb-ft. It also adds an air-to-air intercooler, high-flow fuel injectors, a recalibrated ECU and new air filter for $5,495, before installation. However, the setup only works for six-speed manual transmission models from the 2013 and 2014 model years. If you want to take things even further, HPD is also offering an optional limited slip differential for $1,375 and sport clutch for $640, according to Howell.
Development of the supercharger kit has been ongoing for years. We first saw it on the CR-Z Mugen RZ in 2012 in Japan, in which it barely bumped power to 153 hp. Later at SEMA, Honda improved things to a more respectable 185 hp. Then in 2013, we actually got to drive an early version boasting 190 hp and found it a solid improvement over the stock powertrain. It appears Honda had some further tweaks to get things to the current 197 ponies. More good news: assuming you get the package installed at a dealer, the car maintains the balance of its 5 year/ 60,000 mile Honda limited powertrain warranty.
Is this too little too late, though? The CR-Z is already dead in Europe, and it makes you wonder how much longer it can stick around here. In the meantime, the supercharger kit does give the hybrid hatch something that it really needs - power to back up its sporty looks, though no mention is made of how the modification impacts fuel mileage. Scroll down to read HPD's full announcement about the supercharger.

FIA says FRIC no to trick suspensions in F1
Filed under: Motorsports, Technology

There are few fields in the world where you'll find engineers working as feverishly as they do in Formula One. With races sometimes won and lost by fractions of a second, every little bit counts, so each team retains legions of engineers, all dedicated to finding the tiniest performance edge... without running afoul of the ever-constricting regulations.
This season, one of the most controversial advances has been known as FRIC, and while it's been effectively sidelined for the last few races, reports from the motorsport press indicate that is has now officially been banned by the FIA.
So just what is FRIC? It stands for Front and Rear Inter-Connected suspension. Now, if you're thinking that independent suspensions are the most advanced form available, you're right, but F1 teams have been toying for years with ways to interlink the suspensions at each wheel. Why, you ask? For a number of reasons. For one, it allows for redistribution of suspension dive at the front or rear, which means that under hard braking or acceleration - when the car would either pitch back or forward - the car can be kept more stable. That, in turn, means not only are all four tires loaded evenly and optimally, but the team can also run a more aggressive aero package. It also means that the car can be set up with a softer suspension, allowing the driver to attack the curbs more aggressively, without sacrificing underbody aerodynamics.
Several teams had been running FRIC systems that move hydraulic fluid between the front and rear suspensions, but voluntarily agreed to cease using them for the last two races at Hockenheim and Budapest. Now, the FIA, having apparently deemed FRIC an unfair advantage in contravention of the sporting regulations, has reportedly banned the system altogether. So while those cars may not be running on an even keel any more, at least they'll all be on an even playing field.

Kia Soul EV ad campaign charges up with sexified hamsters
Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Crossover, Kia, Electric

It's official: Kia's adorable Soul-hawking Hamsters have crossed that line. It was one thing when they first hit the scene, and we got a small chuckle out of their trimmer looks for the refreshed, 2014 Soul. This, though, is too much.
This is Kia's latest commercial for the 2015 Soul EV, and it starts off typically enough. The hamsters seem to be tinkering in a laboratory attempting to modify a standard, gas-powered Kia. But then, some Weird Science-like trickery occurs and, well, the results are rather disturbing.
You'll need to watch yourself if you want to experience the horror. Take a look, and then head into Comments and let us know what you think.
